Nothing happened to it. If you read the news, you'll see Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has taken the papacy and nothing is likely to happen to it for a few years either. It's not arcane, it's just a bit religious. And all the other things you said were true, but God is supposed to be changeless, so why should His church be any different? Maybe God wants the people he created as gay to be persecuted? Maybe God wants women to be subservient? Maybe.. I could go on too, but I shan't.
Congrats Joseph. Make the world a better place, and defy everything you have stood for for the last 23 years. Please.
